Local Expert Advice!

"How Do I...?"

How do I get to Hale Koa from Kaneohe MCB? (Current as of: June 2006)

A taxi can cost $70 or more. If you have the time, and if it’s between the hours of 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., and if you can hold all your luggage on your lap or stick it under your seat, here’s how to make the trip by bus:

1. On base, in front of the Commissary and elementary school at the corner of Mokapu Road and Harris, board the "The Bus" Route #70 (runs daily) headed toward Kailua (“Kye-LOO-ah”). Fares are per trip (one transfer per paid fare is good for 2 hours) and EXACT CHANGE is required. Since EXACT CHANGE is required check the latest "The Bus" Fare Page for current fares and discounts (e.g. Medicare card holders) before you travel. . Tell the driver you want a transfer and want to get off in Kailua at Oneawa (“Oh-nay-AH-wa”) in order to take a bus to Honolulu. (Ask if you can get an extra transfer to use at Ala Moana (Ah-lah Mo-AH-nah”) in order to transfer to a bus to Waikiki, or whether you’ll have to pay another fare—I’m not sure about this part!)

2. Get off in Kailua, at Oneawa, and take the #56, #57 or #57A bus toward Honolulu, using your transfer instead of paying again. Tell the driver you are going to the Ala Moana shopping center where you will transfer for a bus to Waikiki and ask to have the right stop pointed out to you.

3. Get off where the driver tells you to, at the back side of the Ala Moana shopping center.

4. Take the "The Bus" Routes #19, #20 or #8 bus toward Waikiki (paying another fare if required...ask, as noted above).

5. Get off at the first bus stop after the bus turns onto Kalia (“Kah-LEE-ah”)Road. The stop is right after the bus passes the main entrance to the Hilton Hawaiian Village and the same stop also serves the Hale Koa. Walk ahead to the Hale Koa entrance.
